Fire Alarm FAQs
How do I know if I need a fire alarm?
It doesn’t matter what industry you are in; we recommend that any business with 5 or more employees needs a fire alarm system. The type of building you have will determine the type of detectors you may need. You will then need this system properly installed, tested, and maintained by a specialist.
Who is responsible for carrying out the fire risk assessment?
You or the risk assessment company that you employ must carry out regular checks and tell all employees about any new fire risks. A risk assessment needs to be carried out and recorded as soon as you have more than 5 employees.
What does a fire alarm system comprise of?
A control panel, wiring, and automatic smoke/heat detectors and manual call points and sounders. More information on everything to do with fire alarms can be found here.
What emergency lighting do I need?
Right now, we do not fit emergency lighting. But depending on your building (domestic or commercial), you will most likely need emergency lighting with a maintenance contract on it.
Are there fire safety standards I need to comply with?
Any building or business must comply with the standard BS5839-1:2017 regarding electronic fire alarm systems.
What type of fire alarm are available?
Wired but the type of fire alarm system can be determined when we review your building.
Do they need to be monitored by an alarm receiving centre?
Usually no but this can depend on your insurer so make sure you ask that question to your insurance supplier.
Do I need trained people to deal with testing evacuation routines?
Yes, your risk advisor would deal with this by training new staff and updating existing staff on changes to evacuation routes or fire risks.
